The BioEco Work Group was chartered in 1997 by the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources (CENR) Subcommittee on Ecological Systems (SES) to improve coordination of Federal Biodiversity and Ecosystem informatics activities and to provide a recognized, high level focal point for those activities.

The charter charged the work group with the following:

  1. Design a framework for a National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII)
  2. Provide a focal point for Federal, intergovernmental, and public-private partnerships
  3. Provide a focal point between Federal Programs and the PCAST Biodiversity and Ecosystems Panel
  4. Provide a focal point for coordination with international programs and organizations
  5. Advise the Subcomittee on Ecological Systems (SES)

BioEco Work Group Activities

The BioEco work group meets several times a year to carry out its chartered missions. The work group also sponsors workshops and other fora to promote understanding of the issues and technologies pertinent to biodiversity and ecosystems informatics.
